Early Veloster Concept Cars

Brought to you by Apple Valley Hyundai

Hyundai introduced the Veloster in 2011 to the world at the Detroit Auto Show. It was specifically targeted to the youth market and was designed by Hyundai’s Premium Youth Lab group.  The Veloster was built to replace the Hyundai Tiburon, which ceased production in 2008.

During the early days of the Veloster, Hyundai’s marketing group churned out many concept cars with the intention of gauging demand for various components and design features. With the help of Apple Valley Hyundai, Winchester, VA, we will look at a few of the most interesting early concept cars.

How soon after initial production did Veloster concept cars appear?

Hyundai, never a company to slow down on the innovation front, began to introduce concept cars right away. Two concept cars were shown at the 2011 SEMA show in Las Vegas.

2011 ARK Performance Veloster – Teaming up with the ARK performance company in Ontario, California, Hyundai showed their ARK Performance Veloster at the 2011 SEMA show. The car featured a twin scroll turbocharger, intercooler, turbo manifold, downpipe and dual exhaust, all developed by ARK. Other modifications include big 6 piston brakes, anti-roll bars, and a new coil-over suspension. The exterior of the car sported a green and black paint scheme, a body package with new front lip spoiler with side skirts and a wide-body fender kit.

2011 PM Lifestyle Veloster - Also at the 2011 SEMA show, Hyundai showed their PM Lifestyle Veloster. This car was a collaboration with the Universal Technical Institute series of US-based technical schools.  The car included Konig wheels, a carbon fiber hood by Seibon, a custom "Peanut Butter" leather interior, and a bright blue paint job.

When did Hyundai develop the next concept cars?

Just a year later, at the 2012 SEMA show, Hyundai showed several more concept cars!

2012 Veloster Velocity – The Veloster Velocity concept car was a collaboration with many of the world’s premier performance product companies. Based on the Veloster 1.6 GDi, it included engine modifications by Cosworth (including performance pistons, rods, turbocharger, intercooler, intake manifold, intake-charging design, fuel system and engine management), CPR (custom exhaust system), Hatchi Design (front and rear braking airflow ducts, lift-reducing rear diffuser, integrated front splitter, aero side skirt lip, oversized rear wing spoiler), and Brembo (brakes with 350x28mm two-piece rotors and 4-piston calipers).

2012 ARK Performance Veloster Alpine – The 2012 ARK Performance Veloster Alpine is a version of the Hyundai Veloster Turbo built by ARK Performance Inc. It features custom Pearl White Paint by Beyond Coachworks, custom Soft-Touch Interior Materials by HEXIS, and dozens of other specialty components.

2012 JP Edition Veloster - The JP Edition Veloster is a concept vehicle based on the Hyundai Veloster and produced in association with designer John Pangilinan. It features a Mint Green body color, ARK performance exhaust, Brembo brakes, Toyo tires, and many body modifications.

What about the famous Zombie Veloster?

Yes, Hyundai made a Veloster for the Zombie set. The Veloster Zombie Survival Machine was unveiled at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. Build by the Walking Dead Chop Shop, it featured a baseball bat with spikes mounted to the trunk, a front mounted double-barrel shotgun, a front bumper "horde plow", a roof-mounted PA system, a slit-panel armor-plated front windshield, Vitamin C textured paint, hand-fabricated armor, and storage solutions for ammo, weapons, and a first-aid kit.
